Fares here run from $49 to $553, and the gap is almost entirely transport, admissions and a second attraction rather than time underground. What each band buys, the one tour that leaves the cave entry out, and the surcharge a solo traveller pays.

The range, and what sits at each end

From $49 to $553 per person, which is a factor of eleven. At the bottom is the cave tour with nothing attached. At the top is a two-day trip across the North Island with a night's accommodation and four ticketed attractions.

The useful thing to understand is that almost none of the difference is cave. Every tour in between buys the same 45 minutes underground, with one exception.

What does the cheapest tour include?

The guided cave tour and admission. Forty-five minutes underground with a guide, the walk, the Cathedral, and the boat through the Glowworm Grotto. GST is in the fare. Souvenir photographs are the only thing excluded.

You supply the transport. That is the whole difference between $49 and $188.

What are you paying for in a day trip?

A seat for five or six hours of driving, a driver-guide, a second ticketed attraction, and on most of them a meal. Between $188 and $301 depending on the vehicle, the length of the Hobbiton block and what lunch turns out to be.

The coach tour is the cheapest way to get both admissions and a lunch out of Auckland. The small-group days cost more and buy you a guide who is talking to eleven people rather than forty-eight.

Which tour leaves the cave entry out?

One: the private driver hire. Its fare covers the vehicle, the driver-guide, hotel or port pickup and all taxes, and it explicitly excludes the entry fee to the caves, which you buy when you arrive.

Meals, and what counts as lunch

Rather more than half include one, and it is a different thing each time: a cafe plate on the most-reviewed day trip, a buffet in the marquee at Hobbiton on one small-group tour, a packed picnic on the coach. One throws in a gift-shop voucher as well.

Where lunch is excluded the operator declares it, and on the long days there are stops where you can buy something.

Priced per person, priced per group

Almost every fare here is per person. One is not: the private driver hire is priced per group for up to three people, and the listing prints that beside the figure.

For three travellers that changes the ranking entirely. Read a per-group figure as a per-person one and you will conclude it is the second most expensive thing on the page, which it is not.

The solo surcharge on the two-day tour

The two-day North Island loop includes a night's accommodation in Rotorua, and a solo traveller pays a NZD 150 accommodation surcharge on top of the fare. It is stated in the operator's additional information rather than in the headline price.

It is the only surcharge of its kind on this list, and it is the normal single-supplement arrangement rather than anything unusual.

What does private actually buy?

Only your own group in the vehicle, and a day whose order can be rearranged. One traveller on the private day tour suggested reversing the itinerary to avoid the heat at Hobbiton, and a private guide can do that.

Both private options work differently. One caps at six and is priced per person; one caps at three, is priced per group, and excludes the cave entry. They are not really comparable products.

Is the most expensive tour worth it?

The $553 two-day tour includes a night's accommodation, four ticketed attractions and return transport from Auckland. Compared with a cave tour it is absurd; compared with organising two days of North Island travel yourself it is reasonable.

Read it as a short guided trip that happens to open underground and the figure stops looking strange.

Free cancellation, on every tour here

Every one of them refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. Nothing is refunded inside that window, and a missed departure is treated as a no-show rather than a cancellation.

Practically, that means the cheapest way to book is early and provisionally. Holding a date costs nothing until the day before.

Are there costs the fare does not mention?

Very few, and the ones that exist are printed rather than buried. The cave entry on the private driver hire is the significant one. The solo accommodation surcharge on the two-day tour is the second.

Beyond those: souvenir photographs at the cave are excluded and sold at the end of the tour; infant seats cost extra on one listing and need 24 hours’ notice; gratuities are excluded on several tours and are not expected in New Zealand the way they are elsewhere; and meals are excluded wherever the operator declares it, which is most of the shorter days.

What is not a hidden cost is the cave admission on a combination day. Every day trip here that visits the show cave includes the ticket, which is most of what separates the fare from the price of the drive.

Which tour is the best value on this list?

Two answers, depending on what you are counting.

By pure cost, the cave tour at $49. It is the entire attraction, admission included, and no more expensive product gives you more of it. For anyone with transport the argument is close to over before it starts.

By cost per hour underground, the twin-cave day trip. Two hours and a quarter below ground against the 45 minutes almost everything else buys, for a fare in the middle of the range, with return transfers from Auckland and a camera you may use in the second cave. Against the combination days it is not close.

The worst value is any transfer bought as a cave visit. The fare is fair for what it is — a driven journey between two cities — and it is a poor way to buy time in a cave, which is what one traveller said about it at some length.

Getting the most out of the money

1. If you have a car, buy the cave tour and spend the difference on something else.
2. If you want more cave rather than more day, the twin-cave tour is the only upgrade that delivers it.
3. Travelling as three, price the per-group private hire properly before dismissing it.
4. Moving between Auckland and Rotorua, stop paying for a round trip.
5. Book early and provisionally. The 24-hour window is free.
