Pairing Middle-earth with a glowworm cave is the single most-booked way to spend a day out of Auckland, and it is a real day: eleven or twelve hours, two ticketed attractions and five or six hours of driving. What follows is what each version gives you, and the one thing none of them gives you more of.

One vehicle, one driver-guide and two ticketed attractions about ninety minutes apart. The Hobbiton Movie Set sits on a working sheep farm at Matamata; the caves are in the King Country, further south and west. A combination day drives you to both and holds a timed slot at each.
Three things are true of every tour in this group and false of the rest of the list. Each one carries a ticketed two-to-three hour guided tour of the Movie Set. Each runs eleven hours or longer, against 45 minutes to nine hours for everything else. And almost every one of them bundles a meal or a drink at the Green Dragon Inn into the fare.
Booking them separately means two sets of timed tickets, two drives and a route that only works in one order. The operators hold slots at both and sequence the day around them.
Five or six hours of it, on roads you do not know, at the end of which somebody else parks. On the small-group versions the driver is also the guide, and the commentary is the thing travellers name most often.
Every tour in this group includes the Movie Set ticket and the cave ticket. Nothing is added at either gate, which is most of what separates the fare from the cost of the driving.

Here is the trade, stated plainly. A combination day buys you 45 minutes to an hour underground. The twin-cave day trip, which drops Hobbiton entirely, buys two hours and a quarter and lets you use a camera in the second cave.
Neither is better. They answer different questions. But if you came to New Zealand for the caves rather than for the films, the combination day is not the booking you want, and its price will not tell you that.

Price band. From $218 to $301 per person for the single-day versions, with the private tour at $486 and the two-day loop at $553.
Duration. Eleven to twelve hours door to door, or two days on the loop. Pickups run in the 25 minutes before a 6:30am to 7:30am departure.
Booking window. Every tour here refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure, so booking early and provisionally is the cheaper mistake. Summer slots go first.
Pickup. Central Auckland, from named hotels. Several operators will not come to the suburbs — the pickup points lists them individually.

If the caves are why you came. Book the twin-cave day trip instead. Two hours and a quarter underground rather than 45 minutes, and a camera you may use in Ruakuri Cave.
If you have a car. The cave tour is sold on its own for $49 and Hobbiton sells its own tickets. You are paying the premium here for a driver, and you already have one.
If a 6am start with children is too much. A twelve-hour day is a long one at five years old — Waitomo with kids sets out the ages and the alternatives.
If you are staying outside the CBD. Check the pickup zone before you book. One operator collects from downtown addresses and a single South Auckland hotel and nowhere else.
Two to three hours, depending which tour you book. That covers the guided walk through the hobbit holes, the Mill and the Double Arched Bridge, and the drink at the Green Dragon Inn.
Forty-five minutes to an hour. That is the full guided cave tour, the same one people driving themselves take, so you are not getting an abbreviated version.
