Rotorua and Waitomo sit on the same side of the North Island and most itineraries visit both. What almost nobody realises is that you do not have to make two separate journeys for them: several tours run the two as one leg, and one of them turns a travel day you were making anyway into a cave visit.

Two destinations rather than two attractions. Rotorua is a town built on a geothermal field, with the geysers and carving schools at Te Puia, the living Maori village at Whakarewarewa and the Wai-O-Tapu thermal park nearby. Waitomo is ninety minutes west of it.
Three things are true of every tour in this group and false of the rest. Each one includes a ticketed Rotorua attraction alongside the cave. Most of them are one-way journeys or overnight loops rather than out-and-back day trips, which is the structural difference. And every one of them puts a second, above-ground ticketed attraction into the same day as the cave.
If your itinerary already moves you between Auckland and Rotorua, a one-way tour puts the cave inside a drive you were making. The alternative is paying separately for a day trip to reach a place you will drive past.
Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu are surface geology at its most theatrical; the cave is the same forces working underground and much more slowly. Seeing them on the same day is a better trip than either alone.
The one-way tours carry your bags. One allocates a large and a small bag per person, which is the difference between a sightseeing stop and a logistical impossibility on a moving day.
Whakarewarewa is a living village rather than a display, and one tour gives it three and a half hours — the longest cultural block anywhere on this list.
A standard day trip takes you from Auckland to the caves and back to Auckland. If Rotorua is on your itinerary anyway, that is a wasted return leg: you drive south past the turning for Rotorua, then drive north again, and make the same journey a second time on another day.
The one-way tours cut that out. What you give up is flexibility, because the tour decides where the day ends, and the cave time is whatever is left after the driving. One of these listings does not publish a figure for it at all.
