The place

About the Waitomo Caves

Waitomo is a limestone country in the middle of New Zealand's North Island, hollowed out by water into a system of caves that runs under the sheep paddocks. In one of them the roof is covered with Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm found nowhere else on earth, and a guided boat carries you beneath it in silence. The show cave has been open to visitors since 1889 and is run today by the descendants of the family who opened it. Three caves are shown to the public; the tours here reach two of them.

The three caves

Glowworm, Ruakuri and Aranui are three different visits, not three doors into the same place. One has the boat, one has the spiral ramp and the cameras, one has neither glowworms nor a river. Which one you want decides which tour you book.

The glowworm itself

Not a worm and not a firefly, but the larva of a fungus gnat that hangs silk lines from the roof and glows blue-green to lure insects onto them. It lives only in New Zealand, and it is the reason your camera stays in your bag.

1887, and who owns it now

A local chief and an English surveyor floated in on a flax raft by candlelight in December 1887, and the cave opened to visitors two years later. It passed to the government in 1906 and was returned to the descendants of the original owners in 1989, who run it still. Your guide may be one of them, which is why the commentary underground is family history as much as geology.

How much does a Waitomo Caves tour cost?

Waitomo Caves ticket prices start at From $49 per person for the cave tour on its own. Guided day trips from Auckland run from about $188 to $301, a private day tour $486, and the two-day North Island loop $553. Every figure here was captured from the operator's own listing on 26 August 2026, and the operators set them, not us.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, and a Waitomo Caves booking is a departure time rather than an open ticket. The show cave runs timed slots with a fixed capacity and asks you to check in 30 minutes before yours. Arriving late forfeits the ticket outright, which is a different rule from cancellation.

How long is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves tour?

Forty-five minutes underground. You walk into the cave complex on foot, stop in the Cathedral chamber for its acoustics, then board the boat for the drift through the Glowworm Grotto.

Is there a boat ride at the Waitomo Caves?

Yes. Every waitomo glowworm caves boat tour here is the same product: the last part of the 45-minute guided tour, drifting through the Grotto with the lamp off. Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave have no boat, and the Spellbound tour has one on a different underground stream.

Can you take photos in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves?

No. Cameras and GoPros are not permitted inside the Glowworm Cave. One operator explains why on its own listing: the glowworms react to a flash by switching off, and take about two hours to come back to full brightness. Photography is allowed in Ruakuri Cave and at Spellbound.

Can I photograph the glowworms?

Not inside the show cave, where cameras are banned outright, so there is no Waitomo Caves photography tour that reaches it. If you want photographs underground, the twin-cave tour includes 90 minutes in Ruakuri where cameras are welcome. The Spellbound day trip permits them too.

Is there a Waitomo Caves night tour?

No. The show cave runs daytime timed departures and closes in the late afternoon, and no operator here sells a night tour. It makes no difference to what you see: the grotto is in complete darkness at every hour, which is why the glowworms read as a night sky at eleven in the morning.

Is there a Waitomo Caves kayak tour?

No. No kayaking is offered in the show caves and no operator here sells a Waitomo Caves kayak tour. The water in the Glowworm Grotto is crossed in a guided boat with the lights off, and there is no self-paddled version of it.

Can I visit the Waitomo Caves from Auckland in a day?

Yes, and most people do. Any waitomo caves tour from auckland is a full day: the operators' own itineraries put the drive at two and a half to three hours each way, so a round trip runs eleven to thirteen hours door to door.

What is the difference between the Glowworm Cave and Ruakuri Cave?

Getting there

Two and a half to three hours from Auckland by road, and closer from Rotorua. The nearest town of any size is Otorohanga, a quarter of an hour away, and the drive times and pickup points for every operator are set out in full.
