This is the attraction itself, sold on its own: 45 minutes underground, a guide who may be descended from the chief who first went in by candlelight, and a boat that drifts through the Glowworm Grotto with the lamp off. You get yourself to Waitomo Village; everything below ground is included.

Your forty-five minutes below Waitomo Village
You start at the visitor centre on Waitomo Village Road and walk in on foot. The upper chambers are drier and larger than most people expect: made paths, stalactites overhead, flowstone along the walls, and a guide working with a hand lamp rather than floodlights. What you see is what they choose to show you, which is a better tour than a lit corridor.
The route descends to a jetty on the underground stream. Everyone sits, the guide takes the back and works the boat forward along a fixed wire, and then the lamp goes out. The last stretch is done in silence — both the light and the noise reach the ceiling, which is the entire reason for the rule. The glowworms explains what is happening up there.
Why there is no photograph of this
Cameras are not permitted anywhere inside. Not phones, not action cameras, and one operator asks for them to be left on the bus rather than carried in switched off. A flash makes the glowworms shut down for about two hours, which empties the ceiling for every boat behind yours.

Getting yourself to Waitomo Village
This fare covers the cave and not the road. Waitomo is two and a half to three hours from Auckland and closer to Rotorua, and the visitor centre is at 39 Waitomo Village Road — drive through the village car park on the right and take the walkway under the road. Getting there has the drive times and the alternatives if you are not driving.
The tour, in the order it happens
Departures run through the day between 9am and 5pm and you choose a time when you book. Check-in is 30 minutes before it.

Who it suits, and who should book something else
Book it if
You already have a car, or you are staying in the King Country. You want the cave and not a twelve-hour coach day around it. You are happy to spend 45 minutes underground and then make your own afternoon.
Choose something else if
You have no transport to Waitomo, or you want more than 45 minutes below ground, or you want to photograph what you see. The twin-cave day trip from Auckland solves all three at once: it collects you, it adds 90 minutes in Ruakuri, and cameras are permitted there.

Know before you go
- Check in 30 minutes early: A late arrival forfeits the ticket with no refund, which is a separate rule from the 24-hour cancellation window. Build the margin into your drive.
- No cameras at all: Leave them in the car rather than in a bag. The rule covers phones and action cameras.
- Stairs throughout: This tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for anyone who has difficulty navigating stairs. Ruakuri has a ramp instead.
- A warm layer: The cave holds the same temperature in January as in July, and it is cooler than the paddock above it. The operator asks for a jacket by name.
- Shoes you can walk in: The paths are made but damp. Comfortable walking shoes are the operator's own wording.
- Transport is on you: The fare is the cave tour only. Allow two and a half to three hours from Auckland each way.

The boat section is short, ten minutes or so. We walked through the cave and saw beautiful formations along with the glowworms, which made up for it. A crying infant carried through the whole chamber.

Questions about this trip
How long is the boat ride itself?
About ten minutes of the 45. Most of the tour is the walk through the upper chambers, and travellers who arrive expecting a long boat trip are the ones who come out disappointed.
Can I photograph the glowworms?
No. Cameras, phones and action cameras are all banned inside the cave. If photographs are the point, the twin-cave tour includes 90 minutes in Ruakuri, where they are permitted.
Is transport from Auckland included?
No. This is the cave tour on its own and you make your own way to Waitomo Village. Every guided day trip listed here includes the drive.
What happens if I am late?
The ticket is forfeited and not refunded. Cancelling more than 24 hours ahead is refunded in full, so moving a booking is cheaper than missing one.
Is it suitable for a wheelchair user?
No. The cave has stairs throughout and rules it out on its own booking page. Ruakuri Cave is entered by a purpose-built spiral ramp instead.
